The Diving
The diving in the Maldives is regarded as some of the best in the world and is quite simply stunning. The unique collection of Atolls rising from the deep blue water of the Indian Ocean offer a range of unforgettable diving experiences from steep walls and wrecks to shallow lagoons of perfect white sands and drifts over exquisite reefs.
A combination of extremely rich reefs and the open waters of the Indian Ocean create an underwater world teaming with over a thousand fish species, and there are now 25 officially protected marine park areas within the Maldives.
Some of the reef systems you will encounter are truly spectacular, with soft corals clearly visible and highly colourful. Most reefs are not without big shoals of Barracuda and Big Eye Jacks, while Sweet Lips and Fusiliers swarm under and around large coral formations creating a spectacular visual experience.
Various species of Sharks can be seen including White Tip, Grey Reef, Nurse and even Hammerheads can be encountered in deep water.
The diving in the Maldives is very well run and most centres offer a very high standard of service with instructors and guides with a vast and detailed knowledge of the local dives sites and conditions.
Most of the diving on the outer Atoll walls is drift diving and much of the large animal sightings will take place in the channels between the individual islands of the Atolls. A common feature of the underwater terrain in the Maldives is the large coral platforms that rise gently from the deep sea and many do not break the waters surface.
