Picture of Rodrigues Indian Ocean

This tiny island just 11 miles from top to bottom and 5 miles across has a charm and a beauty found very rarely anywhere in the world.

A complete mixture of the rock strewn mountains of Wales and the heady atmosphere of the Caribbean; totally different from the sophistication of Mauritius. The whole island is ringed by the lagoon that controls the whole nature of Rodrigues and its truly creole inhabitants. It feels as though time and the modern world has past this secret hideaway by.

Tucked away along the road to no where on the south-east coast is the tiny village of Mourouk which borders the edge of the lagoon and is home to a typical creole style hotel complex - Mourouk Ebony. Perched on the rolling hillside that drops down to the pure white sand that kisses the warm, crystal clear waters of the lagoon, this hotel is the spot that dreams are made of.  This really is an underwater heaven with dive spots that have never been seen and species of fish life not found anywhere else in the world.

The Diving

The experience of diving in Rodrigues is fairly unique, and you will get a great sense that you are away from it all. The unhurried lifestyle of the locals is transferred into the schedule of your diving with one early morning dive around 09:30 am and the second at 13:30. With over 30 dive sites to choose from within a 45 minute boat ride away, and more than enough variation , and superb pristine hard coral formations as good as anywhere else in the world.

The reefs are alive with a selection of marine life including Parrotfish, Unicornfish, Butterflysih, Anthias and Aangelfish all moving on and around the coral formations, some of which are four or five metres in diameter.

Large fish encounters are not a daily event, but when they do they tend turn up on mass with large shoals of Barracuda and Giant Trevally often sighted.

Most afternoon dives take place on the outside edge of the huge lagoon that surrounds the whole island. Although the visibility is not quite as impressive as the open ocean sites, they will usually be around  20 metres and are characterised by dramatic canyons, swim throughs and huge overhangs all home to abundant fish.

One dive that comes highly recommended is the speciality early morning dive - Savehoel. With sunrise around 6am, and the boat leaving at 03:45, some may regard this as something they might leave to the more adventurous. However once you are on the reef as the sun comes up the light you will feel this was certainly worth the effort, and on your return to the surface the sun is out just in time for breakfast.
