If you choose a diving holiday in Mauritius, you will find a good range of diving sites for beginner up to advanced divers. The sheltered west coast, particularly the southern and northern ends have an array of reefs, predominantly rugged in nature with crags, overhangs, caverns and gullies, a common feature on the majority of dives. The main diving season is from October to May but with a good year round climate, it is possible to dive here most of the year.
The north west of Mauritius is regarded as the best for diving on the island in the Grand Bay and Trou aux Biches areas. Here, over 23 dive sites are accessible from the 4* Plantation Resort. Further south, over 10 sites plus the possibiliyt of dive safaris from the 3* Indian Resort and Spa Hotel with an excellent multi-sport centre offering kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, cycling and golf options from the hotel.
Diving in Mauritius matches it's stunning landscape above the water, stunning underwater 'mountains'. You will find some amazingly rare fish like the colourful leaf fish (Rhinopias eschmeyeri) and the 'lion fish' (Pterois antennata). With spearfishing banned, the aquatic fauna remains curious on the approach of fellow divers. Massive Green turtles can be seen.
For advanced divers, the Silverstar wreck offers a great wreck dive. Located 40m down, this former fishing vessel that was sunk to create and artificial reef. Due to its deep depth, the ship has escaped the many ravages of souvenir hunters that are the downside of frequently visited dive sites. The ship is coated with soft corals and gorgonians and is home to some large morays that have taken up residence in the Silverstars holds and cabins.
Diving Safaris are possible to the North Islands and to Sharks Point from Plantation Resort and Ramora Divers. Enjoy a day trip aboard a Catamaran with 2 to 3 dives scheduled on the itinerary (subject to local conditions) with a barbecue and snorkeling so non-divers can also enjoy the day. Pick up from the Resort’s jetty at 08:00hrs and return at around 17:00hrs.
