Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean
Sri Lanka, previously known as Ceylon, in the Indian Ocean offers an endless list of things to see and places to visit, with 1000 miles of palm-fringed coastline, safaris, cultural tours, history and warm climate. Culture and Activities
Sri Lankan history, with over 2000 years of culture, its tea plantations, rainforests and eight Unesco World Heritage Sites make is a must visit destination. Highlights include ; Polonnaruwa, which was the medieval capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to 13th century AD. Now the archaeological treasures, ancient structures, tombs, temples, statues and stupas can be explored, giving a good idea of how the city would have looked. Sigiriya is home to the 5th Century ‘Fortress in the Sky’, also known as ‘Lion Rock’ which, at its summit, are the foundations of what was once a great palace. Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which is considered Sri Lanka’s most prized possession. Also recommended is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.
