Oman, Red Sea and Middle East
Scuba diving in Oman offers a year round, warm weather beach holiday destination which offers scuba divers of all levels and their non diving travelling companions a chance to expore the beautiful coastline. The Sultanate of Oman is located on the Arabian Sea, on the western coast of the Gulf of Oman. The gateway to the Persian Gulf, Muscat is the most well known diving destination with range of diving sites accessible for all levels of diver and wide variety of marine life.
Diving
Our recommended accommodation, the Sifawy Boutique Hotel and the onsite PADI dive centre is located at Sifah, 40 km south of Muscat. Here the reefs and steep faces of Ras Abu Daoud are close to the resort and accessible by a short boat trip. Oman does not offer the visibility of the better known Red Sea resorts but has an easily accessible reef and wall dives for novice divers with hard and soft corals, large shoals of fish and reefs in excellent condition. The Al Munasseir wreck, an artificially sunk warship is 90 meteres in length and the offshore Fahal Islands are a must visit, 8m depth at the top and 26m at the bottom it is accessible for all levels of diver and covered in coral and and numerous fish. Underwater photographers will have to adjust for the greenish plankton rich water but will have a chance to capture eagle, sting ray, squid and cuttlefish as well as a variety of turtles and dolphins. At times Whale shark are seen passing through the straits.
Culture and Activities
Oman has now become more popular with more tourists and scuba divers. The coastline is relatively undeveloped and offers spectacular landscapes from rugged coastlines to dune filled deserts. In Sifah, the beaches and the port are ideal for a walk and some sightseeing. Oman is a friendly country and welcomes visits, however it is a conservative coutnry and visitors should respect local customs and dress modestly. It is recommmend to cover the upper arms and legs while in public areas. A trip to old Muscat to explore the ancient 16th centry Portuguese forts, narrow streets and buildings is highly recommended. Three carved gates in the ancient walls, the Ali Mosque, the New Mosque and the Sultan's palace are all highlights. The Oman Museum and the cultural area offer an insight into the archeology, history and culture of the country.
